Aspiring Student Entrepreneurs to Represent the Philippines in Asia-Pacific Trade Challenge

MANILA, August 14, 2014 – FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp., and Junior Achievement today announced the three pairs of high school students who will represent the Philippines in the FedEx/Junior Achievement International Trade Challenge (ITC) to be held in Hong Kong from August 17 to 21.

Daniel Zeke H. Ochangco and Ron David L. Hilaria of International Christian Academy, Nicole Chiang and Adrian Sy of St. Jude Catholic School, and Deji Eclarin and Lianne Gabrielle Hernandez of O.B. Montessori Greenhills emerged as winners of the Philippine International Trade Challenge held at the Ateneo de Manila Professional Schools in Rockwell, Makati.

The program aims to educate high-school students about the fundamentals of business and instill an entrepreneurial mindset among young Filipinos. Working in teams of two, 258 students attended the International Trade Workshop to learn how to develop business plans outlining inventory management, pricing, promotion, and distribution strategies of an innovative product for international markets.

Ten teams advanced to the local finals where they presented their plans and underwent a Q&A session before a judging panel composed of industry experts. The winning teams were chosen based on their skills in product development, market segmentation, product positioning, promotion strategy, pricing, and financial analysis.

FedEx is committed to supporting education in the Philippines. We are proud that the ITC program has enabled thousands of students to learn the basics of business at an early age. Their experience will serve as a foundation they can build on to thrive as entrepreneurs in a global trade environment,” said Rhicke Jennings, FedEx managing director for Indonesia and the Philippines. “The program also reinforces the strong volunteer spirit already rooted in our corporate culture, as our employees will lead mentoring sessions to prepare the students for the Regional Finals in Hong Kong.”

The three Philippine teams will compete against 27 other teams from China, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam who also won the local International Trade Challenge competitions in their respective countries to advance to the Asia-Pacific Trade Challenge.
